Hiring our heroes is undoubtedly a hot topic among recruiters. As a nation, we are making a concerted effort to assimilate our military personnel back into the workforce after so bravely serving our country. Last week we gave you six nuggets to take away with you about veteran hiring. Now, here are five more that should aid in your efforts to match our jobs to veterans.
Higher Unemployment Among Veterans
Unemployment is higher among Gulf War era II veterans than for all Americans. As of August 2012 these post-9/11 veterans are at 10.9% in comparison to 7.9% for the entire country. Contradicting the nationwide figures, unemployment for these dedicated patriots is trending upward.
Millions of Gulf War Veterans
The number of veterans in our workforce is quite impressive. But if your company is looking to hit the “sweet spot” for hiring – 20-40 year olds – then the following numbers should blow your socks off. Approximately 2.4 million of the nation’s veterans served in Gulf War era II (post-9/11) while 2.9 million were in our military during the Gulf War Era I (August 1990 to August 2001). There is great recruitment potential in those numbers.
Occupational Groups for Enlisted Personnel
The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the following as the top occupational groups for Enlisted Personnel. 15.89% in Combat Specialty (weapon systems and combat operation), 13.79% in Transportation and Material Handling, 13.72% Vehicle Machinery Mechanic, 13.22% Engineering, Science and Technical, and 11.39% Electrical and Electronic Equipment Repair are the top occupations.

Tax Breaks for Hiring Heroes
The VOW (Veterans Opportunity to Work) to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 gives tax credits to companies hiring veterans. The credit can be as high as $ 9600 for a qualified veteran and $ 6240 for those hired by tax-exempt companies. But there’s one catch. The veteran has to begin employment before January 1, 2013 for your company to earn the tax credit. So far there does not seem to be action on an extension (big surprise!).
